Hey, so, I'm thinking about maybe doing Ascendio this year after all...any slashy hotel rooms looking for a roommate? :) (It's not 100% sure yet but I wanted to see if it was even a possibility.)

I feel like I should do a PSA for people making slashy Lestrade vids from BBC Sherlock canon: the movie Maurice has some great young Rupert Graves in compromising positions with a dude (watch till 9:50; pay no attention to the weird score at the beginning, the blond guy is ~conflicted) and in fact some full frontal as well (you're welcome).

Hey, anybody ever wanted to build their own paper/cardboard astrolabe? (The accompanying article has some instructions, though I didn't work my way through to see how detailed they were.)

So, like, years after the heyday of SGA fandom, I finally read Freedom's Just Another World for Nothing Left to Lose. *weeps all over everything*

Actually I've been reading tons of fic lately--job market stress apparently reached a breaking point and manifested itself as a desire to read emotionally resonant fiction, which for me is pretty much always fanfic. (Published romance tends to be a little too swept-away-by-emotions-y for me to handle--some fanfic, at least, sidles up so you don't notice what it's doing. It's like eyedrops, I have to turn my head and drop them in the corners of my eyes, because if I drop straight down I always blink.) Anyway, this is fun! If anyone has recent recs, feel free to post them in comments--I'm even up for stuff in fandoms I don't usually follow, but right now I'm mostly reading HP, SGA, and BBC Sherlock.

ETA: Thinking about it a little more, it's not like most shippy fanfic is less emotionally upfront than the published romance I've read, just that (for the pairings I like) it's romance fics starring the emotionally unaware. Works better for me, I guess.

ETA 2: Not only--or even especially--looking for sad fics, that one was just the one I felt the need to post about. :D

ahahahahahahahahahahaha. From TVLine's summary of pilots ordered for next season:

Untitled Presidential Drama (Mark Gordon Co./ABC Studios)
EP: Mark Gordon
DIR: Roland Emmerich
W: Emmerich and Harald Kloser
The project is set in New York City against the backdrop of the Presidential race of 2012. It centers on a young astrophysics student who learns his destiny lies not in science but somewhere between Heaven and Hell.

So, how bad do we think that's going to be?

ETA: More good ones )

Ralph Fiennes reads two sentences of erotic HP fanfic (while, admittedly, others in the studio laugh). They also mention Harry Squatter and the Sorcerer's Bone, which I remember [livejournal.com profile] dementordelta bringing to The Witching Hour lo these many years ago...

So in the midst of all the Sherlock squee on my flist lately, I was finally inspired to watch the first series. I've seen the whole first series now, and while I like it, I'm having some issues, many related to my general issues with Moffat's writing. (This is partly in response to a request for my issues with it, so it's going to focus on the negatives, fyi.)

Thoughts, spoilers and excessive parentheticals ahoy! )

In related news: the Smash pilot is available free on iTunes. Go check it out if you have an iTunes account, or wait for it to air in February--fanfuckingtastic. Glee plus plot minus autotune!

baaaaaaa!

William Shakespeare

Her infinite goseaward.

Which work of Shakespeare was the original quote from?

You know, I'm used to being the grumpy one when it comes to fiction. It's kind of enjoyable to be the one who just likes stuff and doesn't really care if it's good or not.

In related news, who's watching and enjoying Once Upon a Time? :D :D :D

Two memes! The first one, seen fricking everywhere:

Pick up the nearest book to you.
Turn to page 45.
The first sentence describes your sex life in 2012.

"Intuition is very important to the world of science because so much great science begins with it." This is a book called "Don't be such a scientist: talking substance in an age of style", which looks to be quite interesting. But I'm not sure what it has to do with my sex life.

(I'll note that the second-nearest book was John Scalzi's Old Man's War, in which case the answer was "Everyone we ever knew or loved was there." Kinky!)

Then an iTunes meme, ganked from [personal profile] sorchasilver.

Totally random question: Do any of you know any versions of the song "For Baby (For Bobbie)" that are not by John Denver, Peter Paul & Mary, the Chad Mitchell Trio, Jack Schneider, or Cher? Because I have a memory of a recording that is not the same as any of the previous versions. It was slightly slower than the John Denver version, though, I can say that. (Also it has to be old enough that I would have heard it as a kid, so say before 1997?)

(I didn't actually know the title until yesterday; it's the song that goes "And the wind will whisper your name to me, little birds will sing along in time...")

There are lots of news articles today trying to explain Santorum's finish in terms of demographics, in terms of what "the base" is looking for, etc etc. But I just wanted to mention a point about caucuses: you get to stand up and try to convince other people to vote for your candidate. Maybe he did better because, once people got to the caucuses, they were actually swayed by the arguments their neighbors made.

(See also: things I hate about political reporting. Demographics and polls are really useful for describing the current opinion, but they don't say anything about what makes people change their minds or stick to their present beliefs.)

ETA: with NSFW language.

So, since when has LJ shown poll results in account number order? Didn't it used to be the order in which you answered the poll?

This must have made the rounds within the last month, but in case some of you (like me) didn't see it, there's a Side by Side by Susan Blackwell with Daniel Radcliffe now. She learns that he's a slob and so she makes him wash her windows and sort her laundry (seriously). And then he answers some questions in an American accent, lol! No Potter stuff, though.

(For the uninitiated, Side by Side by Susan Blackwell is a video interview series with Broadway actors; Susan Blackwell, the host, was one of the original cast in [title of show].)

I'm slightly late (um, four hours) but Dec. 9 is my fandomversary: the day [livejournal.com profile] nakushita made me sit down and read a piece of Hermione/Lupin fanfic.

Nine years, dude. Nine years! I was a freshman in college! I hadn't written any fiction since I was twelve years old! Life is crazy, you guys, but it's so much fun knowing all of you (even if I can't be around much these days). :D <3

True confessions time: I like Taylor Swift's song "You Belong With Me". In fact, I like it a lot. And every time she sings "Waiting at your back door" I giggle.

I'd say I'm not proud, but then, I'm posting this to my journal.

ohai, LJ! I've been...um...busy.

A meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] sorchasilver:

Your job is now your Time Lord name. The last digit of your phone number is the current regeneration you are in. The nearest clothing item to your right is now the most notable item in your current wardrobe. The last person you texted is your current companion. Your favorite word is now your catchphrase.

Um, so I'm the Astronomer. I'm in my 7th regeneration. My notable wardrobe item is a natural-and-orange-striped pair of hemp socks. My mom is my current companion (awwww). My catchphrase is "Amazing."

(Idk my favorite word, but amazing is the one I think I use most often relative to the average word usage in English, not counting technical terms for my job. I hope I wasn't supposed to be the Graduate Student. The Astronomer sounds way more Time Lord-y!)

Just got an email from Godiva inviting me to apply to be part of a "consumer consultant" group or something. Had to fill out a survey. It ended as soon as I put in my (low, student's) income ("we already have enough people with your background"--this email came in like an hour ago). loooooooooool

For those of you with an interest in this sort of thing, this article (pdf) is the Platonic ideal of a scientific paper. (There is also a presentation of the same work.)

So I have to pack up the books in my office to move to a new building.* As part of this process, I sorted my books by width. Things to note:

1. All the books of the same width are also of the same height.

2. In order widest to narrowest, the books go like this:
Undergrad textbooks for people who may not major in the sciences; Schaum's outlines
Undergrad textbooks for physicists and mathematicians
Graduate textbooks for physicists
Graduate textbooks for mathematicians; science books used more as references for working scientists than textbooks for classes
Math and physics books translated from Russian in the 1950s-1970s
Dover paperback editions of classic physics and math texts

I mean, I didn't mean to sort them by category! That's just how it worked out! Hee.

*They're building a new fancy science facility on the ground where my building currently is--or rather, the ground adjacent to it. Turns out it was cheaper to build us a glorified trailer than it was to shore up our building to ensure we wouldn't fall into the hole. Also, we'll be a little further away from the construction site now.
