Holiday card time! Leave a comment with address if you'd like one. Also, if you like, you can specify Christmas/Hanukkah/nonreligious, since I have cards to fit all three. Comments screened. International okay.

Apparently I missed the thing where people were posting their first Harry Potter posts for the [livejournal.com profile] hp_reunion. So, here's mine, April 2003, four or so months after I started reading fanfic. I laughed out loud at the first thing in that post because I don't remember it, but since I'm still friends with the Sarah mentioned, I can hear exactly the tone of voice she would have said it in!

Note that I never did finish that long fic, because it was terrible. I couldn't bring myself to read the excerpt! :)

mental health things, or: I try anti-anxiety meds )

And on a totally different topic, getting older and how that's mixing with my new One Direction RPF fandom )

Anyway, so the sum of the freaking out about job applications and getting older and whatever is that I have spent the whole day lying in bed listening to One Direction singles and reading fanfic in various fandoms. Good life choices. :D

And finally, randomly, the Atlantic has gotten access to some most-highlighted passages from popular Amazon ebooks, including Harry Potter. The passages are pretty much what I'd expect, but still cool!

A good Daily Beast article on the changes made for the film version of The Giver, with spoilers, for those of you who would be interested in that sort of thing.

I've been watching the TV show Midsomer Murders--my parents like it, and it's a simple mystery show of about the right length for a good knitting session. I'm still only on the second season, but there are two major things I've noticed:

- LOL so many actors I recognize! (It's sort of like old episodes of Law and Order that way, only maybe more so--maybe since the acting community is smaller in the UK?)

- Weeeeird sexual politics. In the first 5 episodes, 2 of the murderers are queer and another episode involves an obvious gay-stereotype blackmailer (feminine, artistic occupation, very close to his mother). There's also a same-sex couple with one bisexual member (though they don't use the term, and though he's cheating on his partner--but the relationship seems good otherwise). The last episode of the first season had no gay people in it, but then in s2, we have: a suspect who insists he's not gay even while paying a younger man for sex, and then that younger man is murdered in a later episode after becoming a blackmailer himself. WHAT IS GOING ON WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CLOSETED GAY PEOPLE INVOLVED IN CRIME IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE? And then I just started the last episode of season 2, and someone calls one of the detectives kinky, and the detective nearly starts a physical fight with him as a result. o.O

Hey, people with sites at Slashcity (lol I'm so internet 1.0)--I just noticed that I never got charged for my plan at the normal update time in February. Anyone know if anything's up? I see their billing site is currently down, but seems like they would've noticed if it's been down for 6 mos...

I'm going to Japan for work in about two weeks, and I'm...not really looking forward to it? Or rather, I'm looking forward to Monday through Saturday morning, when I'll be 2 different work conferences and/or hanging out with a Japanese colleague in between them, since at those times I'll be with people who speak both English and at least enough Japanese to get us around. But I speak no Japanese whatsoever, and I'm probably going to have to get myself from the Hiroshima airport to my hotel and check in on my own before the conference. (Only "probably"--I haven't checked yet with one person who might have the same flight itinerary as me.) And then at the end of the trip I'm going to have to get from a different place near Tokyo to the Tokyo airport, which is a bus to a train to a different train to a different train, or a cab ride more expensive than my last domestic plane ticket! UGH. And that part is definitely on my own.

At the moment, my plan is to just have a sheet of paper with the name and address of my hotel written on them, and hand that to people with a pleading look. And/or get some sort of no-net-connection-required translation app.

I almost backed out of going, but it's important for my career that I show up at these meetings. Basically, I hate traveling to new places, and I work in a job where that will always be part of it. Bleagh.

(Um. You know. Pushing Daisies guy, and Dead Like Me, and Hannibal, and Wonderfalls. And he wrote the Company Man episode of Heroes, maybe the best one they ever did.)

Hey. Anybody want to help me solve a mystery involving 1920s handwriting and some Eastern European or Russian cities, possibly with the Yiddish or historical versions of their names? :D

More info! )

July means the return of So You Think You Can Dance, one of my favorite TV shows! If you've never tried it, here's the pimp post I made last summer with lots of super awesome dancing clips! Check it out!

For those of you who are already fans, follow this cut for the funniest video about contemporary dancing you'll ever see )

I've had this post in progress for the last few weeks, but decided I actually had to post when I just now got a joke from the Sherlock ep The Great Game. After a deduction, John says, "Fantastic!" and Sherlock says dismissively, "Meretricious," and then Greg says, "And a happy New Year." I always thought this was some sort of capper to Sherlock's deduction, like a tag you'd attach to the end of a story; I only just now got that he was making a meretricious - Merry Christmas pun.

Saw Peter & the Starcatcher a few weeks ago. I don't know that it will, like, linger in my memory, but during it, I adored it--I was laughing so hard I was crying during the climax. (Though I was also kind of wishing I'd seen it with Christian Borle.) I was going to tell everyone to see it, but apparently the tour's over now. :(

But then I was walking to the bus and heard a homophobic slur yelled at a guy. ) So that sucked.

On the other hand, recently at Pride I got to watch a gay man of the bear variety, in coveralls unzipped to the waist, doing some really excellent baton-twirling. Like you do.

Ugh, want fandom time, but don't really have it. Soon, perhaps.

Uh...I know it's been a while. But I joined [livejournal.com profile] come_at_once and so I wrote (had to write) a thing.

Title: Out of the Cold
Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Word Count: ~1700
Warnings: None
Summary: Sleepy middle-of-the-night sex. For the prompt "the dead don't tell lies."

Read on AO3, or follow the cut )

I knew that men's and women's pants [in modern US culture] have very different expectations in terms of tailoring--that is, that women's pants are much more fitted than men's. But, dear reader, I didn't realize how much until I went shopping for work pants recently. )

Since I'm not going to write it now, have a bit of AU John&Mycroft college roommate hijinx:

Hey, it's a [community profile] trope_bingo card!

card )

The Bingo Card Fairy Godmother was clearly with me, because I got not one but TWO possible bingos where 3/5 squares are AUs. Maybe I'll actually finish a bingo for once?

(Actually I have unfinished WsiP for 2 of those AU options already...hmm)

What I definitely wanted out of catching up with nearly 2 weeks of my flist (I've been travelling) was 55 tabs of fic to read. DAMN YOU, YULETIDE.

I noticed when putting away laundry that I seemed to be missing the bottom sheet of a set I'd washed. Guess where it was: I never took it off the bed at all. I just put the next set of sheets on over it. (In my defense, it's the same color as the mattress pad.)

It's nice to know that ze frank is still on the internet (talking about cuttlefish, in this case--he's made a whole series of very funny animal videos).

So I was going to make this post that said, "Discuss: meta has declined in fandom because, with the increased popularity of fanfic specifically and nerd culture in general, we have plenty of non-fannish spaces to fill that need"--and then I realized that probably no one would discuss it, because of the decline of meta in fandom.

Instead, have an incomplete list of unfair reasons I will skip a work of fanfic )

I continue to be deeply impressed by the specificity of the random background characters and settings on Elementary. Compare "random recycling dude talking about the word borborygmus" to any random episode of Law & Order, for example. (Relatedly: Comedian John Mulaney on the subject of Law & Order, plus New York City bartenders.)
