Ugh, Netflix. Seriously?
So I just navigated over to Netflix, and it has little recommendations panels on the front page. One of them was "based on your interest in Doubt and North & South...dark movies with a strong female lead!" And then the recommended movies were:
Dead Like Me: Life After Death (okay, cool)
Serious Moonlight: "When Louise (Meg Ryan) discovers that her husband, Ian (Timothy Hutton), is about to run off to Paris with a much younger woman, Sara (Kristen Bell), she does what any self-respecting wife would do: She duct-tapes him to the toilet, which is where he remains when their home is burglarized." (It's a comedy and sounds kind of interesting, although doesn't look well-reviewed)
Hounddog: The film famous for having a pretty graphic scene in which the main character, played by Dakota Fanning, is raped.
Very Young Girls: "David Schisgall's startling documentary captures the heartbreaking stories of underage girls -- many as young as 13 -- who've been forced into prostitution in New York, exposing how pimps use isolation, violence and drugs to keep girls dependent. Many of the girls interviewed take part in GEMS, a shelter and mentoring program founded by activist Rachel Lloyd -- once a prostitute herself -- that helps them transition out of 'the life.'"
So apparently ~50% of being a "strong female lead" is getting over sexual violence perpetrated on you by men! UGH.
