A collection of random crap, aka "one of these days I should post instead of just adding to the running draft of a post."
I saw a link to this article titled "Five Items You Pay For, But Never Use." Thought it might be interesting, so I clicked on it. The five items?
- Exercise equipment
- Swimming pools
- Wine cellars
- Outdoor kitchens
- Espresso machines
Hmm, that was applicable to my life. :D
I have recently realized that the word I always assumed was "blaggard" is actually "blackguard." This is what happens when you learn words by hearing them! A silly way to go about things, I always think.
Meanwhile, a recent episode of QI had the panel talking about phrases in foreign languages. One panelist offered that the Greeks have a phrase which means "who gives a shit" that translates literally as "there is trouble in the gypsy village." The whole room cracked up and I thought...that doesn't seem at all offensive to you?!
And then I was reading an article about how it's important to practice evacuations from skyscrapers, because the escape routes can be pretty convoluted (stairs often not going down the full height of the building, for example). And it was interesting and detailed and then in the middle the author threw in something about how it was important because then obese people would learn they were slowing everybody else down.
Finally, here is my Wednesday schedule this year: meeting 11-12, meeting 12:15-1:15, class 1:30-3, colloquium 3:30-4:30, colloquium discussion 4:30-5, bi group 6-7. Time to actually work, what's that?
