Aug. 10th, 2014 06:18 pmI've been watching the TV show Midsomer Murders--my parents like it, and it's a simple mystery show of about the right length for a good knitting session. I'm still only on the second season, but there are two major things I've noticed:
- LOL so many actors I recognize! (It's sort of like old episodes of Law and Order that way, only maybe more so--maybe since the acting community is smaller in the UK?)
- Weeeeird sexual politics. In the first 5 episodes, 2 of the murderers are queer and another episode involves an obvious gay-stereotype blackmailer (feminine, artistic occupation, very close to his mother). There's also a same-sex couple with one bisexual member (though they don't use the term, and though he's cheating on his partner--but the relationship seems good otherwise). The last episode of the first season had no gay people in it, but then in s2, we have: a suspect who insists he's not gay even while paying a younger man for sex, and then that younger man is murdered in a later episode after becoming a blackmailer himself. WHAT IS GOING ON WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CLOSETED GAY PEOPLE INVOLVED IN CRIME IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE? And then I just started the last episode of season 2, and someone calls one of the detectives kinky, and the detective nearly starts a physical fight with him as a result. o.O
