So I'm on record (...many times...) as not liking a lot of things that Steven Moffat does, but he's very good at individual episodes, and this...was a very good individual episode. Especially coming after the last 2 very scatterbrained episodes, I really appreciated having only one story, only one throughline to the whole thing.
I also appreciated that John's characterization of needing danger etc was carried through to his relationship with Mary--it often is in fic, but it was nice to see canon follow through on that thread as well.
The moment where John says something like "Who would Sherlock Holmes protect?" while sitting in a room WITH GREG AND MRS HUDSON. (They still don't know, do they?)
The clues Sherlock left for John re: Mary, then John being the "dummy" in the empty house--that was lovely; I like the things they don't spell out. And I didn't figure out it was John there, either. But well done, Sherlock...he couldn't keep it from John, so he managed to both tell him in a believable way and also in a way that showed why & how much Mary cared about him. <3
I kind of wish we'd had a little more discussion about Sherlock's drug use, although that may be affected by how well they've handled it on Elementary.
And I liked that somebody finally beat Sherlock in the game of the mind. I thought BC played that really well, that sort of internal "oh-shit" going on that only had one solution. But: exactly what was the point of shipping Sherlock off to Eastern Europe rather than having him go to jail? Mycroft is all "oh I couldn't stand it if I lost you" BUT IT'S NOT LIKE HE WOULD DIE IN JAIL. Also, a huge media magnate dies, so I guess we're going to cover that up in the name of national security? Anyway, as far as I can tell, the point of that shipping-off was either 1) Mycroft assumed Sherlock would extract himself in time [or he'd go back with his fake identity again to rescue him?], 2) Moffat really wanted to write the goodbye scene.
Ah well. And then there was the whole Moriarty thing, which...I'm annoyed about on a story level, but on a meta level, wouldn't you want Andrew Scott back in that role if you had the option? And he is good. And it does rather point at an s4, which I would never turn down, so.
*hands* Easily the best of this season. I thought the John/Sherlock moments were, if anything, more powerful here for being so understated, though I wouldn't think that if we'd never had the overt ones. Still, good times, and on to the fic! For another two years OH GOD.
